Plot (without major spoilers)

Haru — a shy high school girl who feels her life is directionless — saves a cat from a traffic accident; she later discovers he is the prince of the "Cat Kingdom," and is summoned to their world as a reward for her kindness: a royal marriage proposal! With the help of the noble cat Baron and the friendly fat cat Muta, Haru races against time to regain her freedom before she turns… into a cat!

Highlights

  1. A lively and fast pace makes the film perfect for family viewing in under an hour and a half.

  2. Baron and Muta: Two characters that touched audiences in Whisper of the Heart, here return as full protagonists.

  3. Kingdom Design: Cheese castles, cat guards in armor, and breathtaking perspective games in the maze battle.

  4. Theme of self-discovery: Haru's journey from hesitation to decisiveness sends an encouraging message to teenagers about trusting intuition and achieving self-realization.

Discussion Questions

  • How does the Cat Kingdom reflect human anxieties (dependency, temptation, the illusion of carefree life without responsibility)?

  • Comparing Baron's symbolic role in Whisper of the Heart: Does he again represent the artistic conscience or a pure adventurous spirit?

  • The film uses less detailed backgrounds than major Ghibli works; does this harm its depth or suit its light storytelling style?
